To the Editor:

Cold weather can be risky for everyone, but for the elderly it can be fatal. During the winter older Illinoisans are more susceptible than ever to falling, influenza and hypothermia. We already have heard stories about people who have died as a result of prolonged exposure to bitter cold temperatures and biting winds.

Everyone can help save lives and ensure good health for older friends, neighbors and relatives. We must help protect members of our communities from cold weather-related illnesses or injuries. The Illinois Council on Long Term Care, an association of nursing home professionals, suggests several tips to safeguard elderly parents and grandparents from falling, the flu and other winter ailments.

Ensure loved ones wear hats, mittens, scarves and a warm coat and layers when going outside.

Provide proper footwear for older persons outdoors.

Make sure sidewalks and driveways are clear and sanded or salted.

Keep apartments and rooms at 70 degrees or warmer.

Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, to avoid sharing germs.

Wash your hands thoroughly, to prevent spreading the flu or other bacteria.

We must all work together to protect our family members and friends this season. Prevention is the key.
